2020-08-20: Publication of the consultation on the transposition of Directive (EU) 2019/790 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market and amending Directives 96/9/EC and 2001/29/EC (except articles 15 and 17).

18-06-2021: The implementation decree (issued by the Minister for the Economy and Industry) is published in the official Gazzetta of the Maltese Government. The decree implements the provisions of the directive as regulations that supplement the existing copyright act. (According to Article 59 of the copyright act, the Minister for the Economy and Industry is authorized to issues such regulations without any involvement of parliament):

29-06-2021: Updated The country page for Malta on the Eurovision DSM tracker to reflect the final implementation.
07-07-2021: The National Book Council issues a statement criticising the implementation effort, calling it a “a shortsighted, incomplete reform which does not truly provide for a workable copyright framework for the benefit of all stakeholders within the creative landscape.”
